Late Summer to Peak Foliage in Maine: What’s Happening Around Bethel & Sunday River (August–October 2026)

There’s a particular stretch of the year in Maine’s western mountains when the calendar quietly fills up — late August through mid-October, when the valley shifts from green to gold and every weekend seems to bring another reason to be outside. If you’ve been meaning to plan a trip to the Bethel and Sunday River area, this is the window worth building it around.

Here’s what’s coming up in the next few months, and how to make a proper stay of it.

The Monarch Festival at Valentine Farm — August 29–30

The Mahoosuc Land Trust’s Monarch Festival is one of those small-town events that stays with you. Held at Valentine Farm Conservation Area just outside Bethel Village, it’s a free, unhurried afternoon of pollinator gardens, birding trails, monarch tagging, and crafts under late-summer light, the kind of Sunday that reminds you why this valley draws people back. A keynote talk kicks things off Saturday evening at Telstar High School; the festival itself runs Sunday from noon to 4.

A Two-Festival Saturday — September 19

Mid-September brings an almost unfair concentration of good things. At Sunday River’s South Ridge, Maine Brew Fest pours from more than thirty of the state’s best breweries, with chairlift rides and live music running alongside. Down in the village, Bethel’s beloved Harvestfest & Chowdah Cookoff takes over the town common, a dozen-plus restaurants competing for chowder bragging rights, an apple pie contest, wagon rides, and local makers. The two are eight minutes apart. You can do both, and you should. (One note: confirm Harvestfest’s date with the Bethel Area Chamber closer to the day — it traditionally lands on September’s third Saturday.)

The next afternoon, the Homegrown Food Festival returns to Valentine Farm (September 20) — a gathering of local farms, food producers, and the people who care about them. A fitting way to close a very Maine weekend.

Flannel Fest — September 26–27

Sunday River leans fully into its logging-country roots with a weekend of axe throwing, cast-iron tossing, and lumberjack-style competition at South Ridge. The dress code is exactly what you think it is. It’s playful, a little absurd, and completely charming, flannel season made official.

Music Fest at Peak Foliage — October 3–4

By early October the hillsides around the resort are in full color, and Sunday River’s Music Fest weekend sets live performances against what is arguably the best backdrop in New England. Bring a layer, find a spot on the grass, and let the afternoon go long.

Fall Fest & the North American Wife-Carrying Championship — October 10–11

The season’s grand finale. Sunday River’s Fall Festival weekend brings the Blue Mountain Arts & Crafts Fair, sixty-plus booths of Maine-made carpentry, jewelry, and crafts filling South Ridge Lodge — alongside the gloriously eccentric North American Wife-Carrying Championship (Saturday) and the New England Cornhole Championship (Sunday). Foliage, craftsmanship, and grown adults sprinting an obstacle course with their partners over their shoulders: fall in Maine, distilled.

Between events

The quieter days are half the reason to come. Grafton Notch State Park is at its best in late September, Screw Auger Falls, Table Rock, and the trailheads of the Mahoosucs are all within a short drive. The Bethel Farmers’ Market runs Saturday mornings through the season, and the village’s restaurants and shops settle into their unhurried fall rhythm.

Where to stay

Our Mayville Duplex sits in the heart of Bethel Village, two thoughtfully designed units, eight minutes from Sunday River’s slopes and a short walk to the town common where Harvestfest unfolds. It’s an easy base for festival weekends, foliage drives, and everything in between, and with two units side by side it works beautifully for two couples or a larger group traveling together.

For something quieter, The Cabin at Bear River in Newry is our slow-living retreat, hot tub, sauna, and the river below, ten minutes from both the mountain and Grafton Notch. Book a festival day, then disappear back into the trees. It’s built for couples, and October books early.
