The Mountain’s Busiest Stretch: Bethel & Sunday River, December Through February
There’s a version of this valley that only shows up once the snow actually sticks. The farmers’ market has folded its tables for the season, the foliage drives are a memory, and Sunday River, which spends October asking you to come watch leaves, spends the next three months asking you to come do something harder than that. If you’ve stayed with us before for a quieter season, this stretch is the one locals plan whole winters around.
December, in one long exhale
We’ve written about most of December’s calendar before, so we’ll keep this part brief: Santa Sunday (Dec 13) still means several hundred skiers in full Santa costume gathering at South Ridge for a group photo, a lift ride, and a ski-down that benefits The River Fund. Tree Lighting (Dec 14) still means hot cocoa, ornament decorating, and a Bethel Area Food Pantry donation drive at the South Ridge Welcome Center.
What’s new is what’s been added to Winterfest Weekend (Dec 19) since we last checked: alongside the twilight skiing that’s long marked the resort’s birthday, this year adds a free, family-friendly drone show over South Ridge and an Ugly Sweater Party with live music at Foggy Goggle. It’s shaping up to be the single busiest night of the month.
New Year’s Eve (Dec 31) has firmed up, too — fireworks at South Ridge at 8pm, extended lift and twilight hours until 8, and a 21+ Foggy Goggle party running 9:30pm to 12:30am to actually ring in 2027. (If a dinner-theater date night sounds better than a mountain-wide party, Sunday River is also running a Murder Mystery night in the Grand Ballroom on December 12, not our usual beat, but worth knowing about if you’re looking for an excuse to book a sitter.)
January’s long weekend
MLK Weekend (Jan 16–18) returns with a full Saturday build: twilight skiing across South Ridge and North Peak from 3 to 6:30pm, a Dinner with Eddy and Betty at 5:30 in the Mahoosuc Room (tickets still to be announced), and fireworks at 7pm slopeside. Sunday and Monday stay lighter, standard and holiday hours, respectively, with no additional events posted as of this writing.
February, wide open
This is where the season turns a corner, and it’s mostly new territory for us. Pride Weekend (Feb 5–7) brings a full weekend of skiing and riding, on- and off-mountain meetups, and a “Flannel & Fierce” Pride Party at the resort’s après bar on Saturday night. Then, starting the following week, Presidents’ Week (Feb 13–21) — nine straight days that amount to Sunday River’s biggest stretch of the winter: all eight peaks open, lessons running, a snow-and-ice lounge called Iglu Sunday River at the base of the Jordan 8, and nightly après both on the mountain and off it. If you’ve been waiting for the moment to actually use every trail at Sunday River, this is it. Valentine’s Day falls squarely inside that week, the resort hadn’t posted its 2027 specials as of this writing, but a Presidents’ Week trip timed around the 14th writes its own itinerary either way.
The quiet version of all of this
Not every reason to be here involves a lift ticket. Somewhere in this same stretch, no fixed date, entirely weather-dependent, Grafton Notch starts freezing into one of western Maine’s known ice-climbing destinations. Local guiding outfits treat it as a go-to spot once the cold holds, and even if you have no interest in the rope and crampons, the Notch in deep winter is worth the ten-minute drive from The Cabin at Bear River on its own: frozen falls, empty trailheads, and a kind of stillness the fall foliage crowds never see.
As for opening day itself: Sunday River hadn’t confirmed its exact 2026–27 date as of this writing, though the ski-industry tracker OnTheSnow projects mid-November; Mt. Abram’s own projected date, by the same source, lands around December 19. Neither resort had made it official yet, so take both as rough guides rather than plans, check the resorts’ own sites once you’re ready to book.
Where to stay through it
Our Mayville Duplex, right in Bethel Village, stays the easiest base for splitting time between town and mountain, eight minutes to Sunday River, walking distance to Main Street, and close enough that a Tree Lighting trip doesn’t require much planning.
The Cabin at Bear River in Newry is, more than any other time of year, the property built for this exact season. Ten minutes from both Sunday River and Grafton Notch, with a hot tub and sauna that stop being a nice extra and start being the whole point once the Notch freezes over. It’s where we’d point anyone coming up for Pride Weekend, Presidents’ Week, or a New Year’s Eve that doesn’t end with a drive home in the dark.

Event details are drawn from Sunday River’s official events and events-calendar pages, verified October 25, 2026. Dates, times, and ticketing can shift, check the organizer’s site before you travel: sundayriver.com/events. Opening-day figures for Sunday River and Mt. Abram are third-party projections from OnTheSnow.com, not resort-confirmed dates.
