An Anniversary Weekend in Bethel, Maine

An anniversary deserves more than a nice dinner. It deserves a place where the two of you can hear each other think. Bethel, a mountain town in western Maine, has quietly become one of the best anniversary and honeymoon getaways in New England: big landscapes, small crowds, and private cabins built for two. Here is a three-day plan you can follow in any season.

Why Bethel works for couples

Bethel sits in the Mahoosuc foothills, minutes from Sunday River and the waterfalls of Grafton Notch. It is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Portland and just under 3 hours from Boston, so you can leave after work Friday and still catch the stars from a hot tub that night. The town is small enough to feel like a secret, with a handful of genuinely good restaurants on and around Main Street.

Most of all, it has the kind of lodging an anniversary calls for: not a hotel room down a hallway, but a whole cabin in the woods with nobody on the other side of the wall.

Day one: arrive and settle in

Plan to arrive in the late afternoon. Bring groceries for an easy first dinner and a slow breakfast. Then let the cabin do the work.

Start the sauna as soon as you walk in; it takes 30 to 40 minutes to heat. While you wait, open a bottle, put a record on or a fire in the fireplace, and look out at the woods through floor-to-ceiling glass. When the sauna is ready, take turns between the heat, a cold breath of outside air, and the hot tub. It is the easiest way we know to leave the week behind.

Day two: an adventure, then a celebration dinner

Spend the morning outside together. The right plan depends on the season.

  • Winter: ski Sunday River, or snowshoe to Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Notch State Park, about 14 miles north of Bethel on Route 26. Our winter weekend for two has the full plan.
  • Spring: the waterfalls in Grafton Notch run their fullest with snowmelt. Walk Screw Auger Falls, Mother Walker Falls, and Moose Cave in about an hour.
  • Summer: hike Table Rock for a view down the notch, then picnic beside the Bear River.
  • Fall: the notch turns into a corridor of color in late September and early October. Go midweek if you can.

Come back for a long afternoon soak, then dress up a little. Book your anniversary dinner in Bethel ahead of time. The Elizabeth on Main Street is the town’s special-occasion restaurant, with Latin and Mediterranean influences and a serious wine list. Modern Barn and Mayville Union House are both excellent for a relaxed but special night.

Day three: a slow morning

No alarms. Make pancakes, take your coffee outside, and walk the property one more time. Before checkout, take a last hot tub soak and let yourselves be in no hurry at all.

Where to stay for an anniversary or honeymoon

The Cabin at Bear River, Newry. Our Japandi-inspired one-bedroom sits on 3.5 private acres with its own wooded trail down to the Bear River and a picnic table at the water’s edge. A private sauna, a six-person hot tub, a fire pit with egg chairs, a fireplace, and a king bed behind floor-to-ceiling windows. Couples have marked a 20th anniversary, a first anniversary, a honeymoon, and a wedding night here. One wrote that it gave them exactly the peaceful, romantic atmosphere they came looking for.

HAVN, western Maine. Two private Nordic cabins, Alpen and Skog, share 39 acres and nothing else. Each has its own sauna, hot tub, fire pit, and fireplace, with outdoor space set up for privacy. Private paths lead down to picnic tables by the brook, and the kitchens are designed for cooking a long dinner together. Alpen is classic and alpine, with the afternoon sun. Skog is a little more playful, with the morning sun. HAVN opens to its first guests this winter.

Small touches that make it feel like an occasion

  • Pack a playlist or a favorite record, a card you wrote at home, and the good bottle you have been saving.
  • Book dinner as soon as you book the cabin. Bethel’s best tables fill on holiday weekends.
  • Plan one thing outside and one long soak each day, and leave the rest of the schedule open.
  • Dog part of the family? The Cabin at Bear River and both HAVN cabins are pet friendly.
