Valentine’s Day 2027 in Bethel and Sunday River: A Planning Guide
Valentine’s Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, and the next day is Presidents’ Day. That makes it a three-day weekend, and in Maine it is also the start of February school vacation, which runs February 15 to 19 in most districts. Translation: it is one of the busiest weekends of the year around Sunday River. The good news is that it is also one of the most romantic, if you plan early. Here is how.

First, pick your weekend
- The long weekend (Friday, February 12 to Monday, February 15). The classic choice: three nights, the most energy in town, and Valentine’s Day right in the middle. Book your cabin and your dinner now; both will sell out.
- A week early (February 5 to 7). The quiet choice. Same snow, same sauna, easier dinner reservations and calmer slopes. Celebrate on the Saturday and nobody will know the difference.
- Midweek after vacation (the week of February 22). The lowest-key option, with the mountain to yourselves on weekdays and the best chance at any table you want.
A Valentine’s weekend, hour by hour
Friday: arrive and warm up
Drive up in daylight if you can. Start the sauna as soon as you walk in, since it takes 30 to 40 minutes to heat, and take your first round before dinner. Keep the first night simple: something easy from the kitchen, the fireplace, and the hot tub under the stars. Our guide to the Nordic sauna ritual has the full routine.
Saturday: a day on the mountain, dinner out
Ski Sunday River in the morning, or snowshoe to Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Notch, where the gorge turns to ice in midwinter. Come back for a long afternoon soak. Then go out on Saturday night rather than Sunday: it is Valentine’s Eve, the energy is right, and you get Valentine’s Day itself to yourselves.

Sunday, February 14: slow
Breakfast in bed, coffee by the window, no alarms. Take a walk if the snow is good, then spend the afternoon trading the sauna for the hot tub. If you want one more outing, the Artist’s Covered Bridge in Newry is beautiful under fresh snow and almost always empty. Finish with dinner in, by the fire.
Where to eat on Valentine’s weekend
Reserve as soon as your cabin is booked. A few that are made for the occasion:
- The Elizabeth on Main Street, Bethel’s special-occasion dining room, has offered a Valentine’s prix fixe in past years.
- Ember at Sunday River’s Grand Summit Hotel, with its igloos outside, is hard to beat on a snowy February night.
- Modern Barn and Mayville Union House are both candlelit, warm and excellent.

Other ideas for the weekend
- Ride the Chondola to North Peak. Enclosed cabins, a seven-minute ride and big views over the Mahoosucs. Sunday River sometimes runs special evening dinners at the North Peak Lodge on select nights, so check their events calendar when you book.
- Snowshoe somewhere quiet. Screw Auger Falls and the trails around Grafton Notch are about 14 miles north of Bethel on Route 26.

Where to stay
The Cabin at Bear River, Newry. A Japandi one-bedroom on 3.5 private acres, about 10 minutes from Sunday River, with a private barrel sauna, a six-person hot tub, a fireplace and a king bed behind floor-to-ceiling windows. Couples have chosen it for an engagement, anniversaries, a honeymoon and a wedding night.
Alpen and Skog at HAVN, western Maine. Two private Nordic cabins on 39 acres, 15 to 20 minutes from Bethel and Sunday River, each with its own cedar sauna, hot tub, fire pit and fireplace. Bring all-wheel or four-wheel drive in winter.

Your Valentine’s checklist
- Book the cabin now. Presidents’ Day weekend fills first.
- Reserve dinner the same day.
- Pack swimsuits, robes, warm slippers and a playlist.
- Plan for winter roads: leave time, and bring a vehicle with good snow tires.
- Leave Sunday open. That is the point.
