Date Night in Bethel, Maine: Our Favorite Romantic Restaurants

Bethel is a small mountain town, but it eats like a much bigger one. Between Main Street, Route 2 and the base of Sunday River, there are more genuinely good dinner tables than you would expect, and several of them are built for two. Here are our favorite places for date night in Bethel and Newry, what each one does best, and how far ahead to book.

Mayville Union House (our favorite)

174 Mayville Road (Route 2), Bethel. If we only had one night out in Bethel, this is where we would go. Mayville Union House is a beautifully renovated public house a few minutes from Sunday River, with a warm dining room, an indoor fireplace, a great bar and a thoughtful wine list, plus gardens and an outdoor fire pit in the warmer months. It gets lively at peak times, so ask for one of the quieter window seats. Sunday evenings are the easiest night to get a table for two.

The Elizabeth

32 Main Street, Bethel. For a dressed-up milestone dinner, this is the other table to know. The Elizabeth is a restored Victorian inn on Main Street with a dining room that cooks with Latin and Mediterranean influences, a creative cocktail list and a deep wine list. It is the room locals point to for anniversaries and special occasions, and it has offered a Valentine’s prix fixe in past years. Dinner runs Wednesday through Sunday evenings; reserve ahead, especially on holiday weekends.

Modern Barn

19 Summer Street, Bethel. Candlelight, high beams and a wine list with real depth, set in a restored 1890 barn a few minutes from Sunday River. Modern Barn is family owned and works equally well for a relaxed date or a celebration dinner. Open Tuesday through Saturday evenings, with reservations on OpenTable.

Ember at Sunday River

Grand Summit Hotel, Sunday River, Newry. Ember brings New England cooking to an open kitchen in an intimate, mountain-modern room on the slopeside level of the Grand Summit Hotel, with craft cocktails to match. In winter, the igloos just outside are one of the most memorable date-night seats in the area. Book well ahead on weekends.

Le Mu Eats

119 Main Street, Bethel. The casual pick, and the one we send people to most. Le Mu started as a food truck and now cooks bold Laotian and Southeast Asian fusion on Main Street: housemade noodles, banh mi, curries with real heat, and a spicy margarita worth the trip. It is small and fills fast, keeps limited days, and closes for a break in late spring, so check hours before you go.

The Mountain Room

Peak Lodge, North Peak, Sunday River. A ski-season-only spot run by Portland chef Harding Lee Smith, halfway up the mountain at the top of the Chondola. It is a daytime place, small plates, lunch and drinks with a big view of the Mahoosucs, which makes it a perfect midday date on a ski day. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Mountain Social Kitchen & Bar

43 Main Street, Bethel. A good call for a relaxed date night or après-ski drinks in the middle of town, when you want something easy after a long day outside.

When to book, and a few tips

• Book dinner the same day you book your cabin. On holiday weekends and February vacation, the best tables in Bethel go weeks ahead.
• Check hours before you plan around a place. Many Bethel restaurants close early in the week, and hours shift between ski season and summer. Hours here are current as of November 2026.
• Plan one night out and one night in. A long dinner in town is great; so is cooking together and finishing in the hot tub.

Where to stay

Every one of these restaurants is a short drive from our cabins. The Cabin at Bear River in Newry is about 10 minutes from Sunday River and Bethel, and the two Nordic cabins at HAVN are 15 to 20 minutes out, each with a kitchen designed for cooking a long dinner together.
