Where to Propose Near Sunday River: 7 Spots in Western Maine
This fall, a couple got engaged at The Cabin at Bear River. Afterward, she wrote to us: “We got engaged here so this cabin will always be a special place for us.” That is the whole point of choosing the right place. The question is not just where you ask, but where you will want to come back to.
Western Maine is full of good answers. Waterfalls in granite gorges, a covered bridge painters have loved for a century, a ledge with one of the best views in the state, and quiet cabins where nobody is watching. Here are seven places to propose near Sunday River and Bethel, and how to pull each one off.

1. Your own cabin, after the sauna
The most private option, and the one most people end up glad they chose. No audience, no timing around other hikers, and nowhere to be afterward. Light the fire pit while your partner is in the sauna, or wait until you are both in the hot tub under the stars. If you want a photo, a tripod and a phone on a timer will do; the string lights do the rest.
The Cabin at Bear River has a fire pit with egg chairs, a private sauna and hot tub, and its own trail down to the river. The cabins at HAVN sit on 39 private acres with outdoor space set up for privacy and private paths down to picnic tables by the brook.
2. Table Rock, Grafton Notch
The big-view option. Table Rock is a broad granite ledge about 900 feet above the trailhead on Route 26, with a sweeping view across Grafton Notch to Old Speck. The loop is roughly two and a half miles, short but steep in places, so it suits couples who already like to hike. The ledge drops off sharply and has no railing: choose your spot well back from the edge, and keep the ring zipped in a pocket until the moment. In winter it is a snowshoe or microspike hike for experienced hikers only.
3. Screw Auger Falls
About 14 miles north of Bethel on Route 26, the Bear River drops 23 feet through a narrow, sculpted granite gorge. It is a short, easy walk from the parking area, which makes it perfect if you want a waterfall without a real hike. Summer afternoons get busy, so go early in the morning. In winter the gorge turns to ice and the crowds disappear; bring snowshoes.

4. Step Falls Preserve
Just south of Grafton Notch, Wight Brook tumbles about 250 feet down a staircase of granite ledges and pools. The trail to the falls is roughly half a mile and easy. The preserve is cared for by the Mahoosuc Land Trust, the lot fills quickly from late morning on summer days, and there is no parking along Route 26, so plan for an early start. That also happens to be when the light is best.
5. The Artist’s Covered Bridge
Built in 1872 over the Sunday River in Newry, the Sunday River Bridge earned its nickname by being the most painted and photographed covered bridge in Maine. It is closed to cars and open to anyone on foot, a couple of miles up Sunday River Road. Peak foliage in early October is spectacular; a fresh snowfall is just as good and far quieter.
6. North Peak, by Chondola
Sunday River’s Chondola climbs to North Peak in about seven minutes, with a choice of open chairs or enclosed cabins and views over the Sunday River valley to Old Speck. In summer and fall it runs as a scenic ride; in winter, ask the resort about tickets for non-skiers. Propose at the top, then celebrate with lunch at The Mountain Room in the Peak Lodge during ski season.
7. A corner table at The Elizabeth
If your partner would love a dressed-up dinner, The Elizabeth is Bethel’s special-occasion room: a restored Victorian inn on Main Street with a candlelit dining room. Call ahead and tell them what you are planning; restaurants that host milestone dinners usually know how to help. More ideas in our guide to date night in Bethel.

A few tips for the day
- Have a weather plan. Mountain weather changes fast. Pick a second spot, and remember the cabin works in any weather.
- Time it with the light. Look up sunrise or sunset for your date. Golden hour makes every photo better and every trail quieter.
- Protect the ring. Keep it zipped in an inside pocket, and never open the box over water or near a ledge.
- Want photos? Book a local photographer to wait nearby, or bring a small tripod and use a timer.
- Book the dinner and the cabin first. The rest of the weekend falls into place around them.
